Meet an Aussie: The one you've all been waiting for!

Here it is Court Rivals, the one you've all been waiting for. It's none other than Mr. "I Just Won the Sportsman Award Motherfuckers!", CAMEL, saying g'day.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/2001859367033693065_rs.jpg

So, you've been here as long as most can remember, and even longer to others. Why is it your time here must end?

A few reasons. As most will know, I've been looking for an exit strategy for a while now. My girlfriend, Ashlee, got bored with the game after a couple of seasons, which meant the pressure was on me to cut back on my CR time! Coupled with the fact that I've been here for 10 seasons, and currently financially I'm really counting the dollars, I just felt it was time to go.

Since I made the decision to go, I've also landed a new job (finally) so I don't think I'll have the time either, particularly as I'm planning to do further study part time whilst I'm working!

Some would say you're the flagship in the fleet of Aussies - I know I certainly feel that way. What do you have to say about that, and who do you think will step up to wave the Aussie flag in your absence?

I'm big-boned. I'm not a ship. Actually, I'm not even big-boned, I'm normal-boned. I resent this question.

With that said, there's a whole bunch of Aussies here who contribute a lot. South01 is the one that got most of us here with his thread on Sportal - if he hadn't made that, I'd have never rocked up here (albeit I came a few days late because I had exams and decided I'd check it out after that!). It's always nice to get recognition, but I'm probably just a little more vocal on the forums than a lot of other guys who have contributed a hell of a lot to the site.

As far as stepping up with the flag, SASCO and yourself are doing a great job stepping in and captaining the teams I used to captain (WWWC, ROTLW, and next season, the Marmots); you guys will do great, as will guys like clips, Silencer, alison and kajen who I see around the forums, and then other great users who the general public wouldn't know but are great teammates and trainers (manchild, Turbz, among others); I'm pretty confident the Aussie contingent here will always be strong!

What's the best memory you have from your time on CR?

Dunno. It was pretty sweet winning two championships in one season AND captaining two teams into the same Championship game but then I also felt bad for the WWWC, who lost that game. Probably that playoffs series, I reckon. It's also been great to help some inexperienced captains out and then see their teams go on to big things.

A slight change of topic. There was once some speculation that you were/are a member of the moderation staff. What's your say on that?

Isn't there still speculation on that? If not, why not? I demand speculation.

Seriously though, does anyone actually believe that I'm a mod? And if so, can I have their email address? I have an email I need to send to them about an inheritance...

You're one of the more respected members of the community, and your opinion is valued highly. Where do you see this game in the future, both near and far?

Hard to say. I can't see many changes in the short term (or at least haven't heard about any), and without changes in the short term, I think it will curtail the growth of the site; people will be less inclined to stick around without constant improvement to the game engine and site. With that said, new players will still feel the same thrill that the rest of us felt when we first started playing, so I think rumours of the site's impending death are greatly exaggerated.

Another change of topic. This one's a staple of the "meet an aussie" series. Who's the hottest chick in the world?

I'd like everyone to see Slicer's suggested answer for me for this question: *insert pic of your girlfriend and/or sister*

Not cool. Not cool. And yes, whilst my girlfriend is undoubtedly the hottest chick in the world, I'm not putting her picture up here!

Anyhow, it's impossible to pick the next hottest chick, I'll pick a couple of Aussie girls here.
First, one who perhaps doesn't get the press that she deserves - Megan Gale
http://www.pitodoble.com/imagenes/2007/12/megan_gale.jpg

And some other more regular girls - Jennifer Hawkins
http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2004/09/05/hawkins-blunder-composite,0.jpg

And Miranda Kerr
http://stupidcelebrities.net/wp-content/miranda-kerr.jpg

To keep the classics rolling, what's the best thing about Adelaide?

The food and drink here is amazing. My brother-in-law is from Oregon (no slouches when it comes to winemaking themselves), and his family was over here for my sister's wedding recently, and they remarked that they were amazed how good the food here was. And they're not kidding - it's awesome.

I love living in the premier wine region of Australia, as it means that the wineries are on my doorstep and I can take off and spend the day wandering the cellar doors looking for new and interesting wines. My next major purchase will be a bottle of Seppeltsfield 100 - a 100 year old fortified wine that received a perfect score in a recent wine review. I also love the lifestyle here; it's so much more laid back than the eastern states of Australia. Say what you like about Adelaide, it's a damn relaxing city to live in.

The absolute best things about Adelaide, though, are the Adelaide Crows (Aussie Rules), Adelaide United (soccer/football) and Adelaide 36ers (basketball). Had season tickets for all of them since I was 5 except for United, as they only started up a few years back - but I've been there since the start for them too. I love my local sport.

Basically, I love this city, and I think that most of the criticism of it comes from people who:
a) haven't been here; or
b) haven't been shown the cool things here when they've been here; or
c) have low attention spans and need to be doing something different every minute of every day.

Proudest CR achievement?

Captaining two teams to the championship game in Bird, and creating a whole bunch of fantastic teams with great teammates that have stood the test of time - Marmots, ROTLW and WWWC have had the same core group of players from Season 2 (Marmots) and Season 3 (ROTLW/WWWC). Pretty proud of that, really.

Aaaaand, if you could be Kaz for a day, what would be on top of your to-do list?

Assuming the site is making enough (obviously I don't see the financials), I'd employ a second programmer, either full or part-time, depending on the financial side. I'd also employ a few more (free!) community manager type people (similar to mods, but not quite the same - i.e. more designed to post on the forums, discuss game matters, rather than issuing bans etc). I think the last few seasons have shown that Kaz is struggling to continue to develop new features because the site has grown to the point where managing the current members and the game will take up so much time that development time is minimal. This is, in my opinion, why we haven't seen so many upgrades recently compared to the start of the site; with so many more members now, there's so much more maintenance of the membership base required.

That'd be my suggestion!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There it is. This one's formatted a little differently because Camel went to the trouble of sourcing images for me, and since we've already had two Adelaidean interviewees.

It's unfortunate that my 10 season long quest to get Camel to post a pic of his sister has failed, and it's unfortunate for the rest of you that you haven't had the privilege of seeing a picture of his girlfriend - she's smokin'.

I'd have to say that Camel's "kaz for a day" suggestion is probably the most sensible and logical suggestion I've seen in a while - and one similar to an idea of mine I've been bugging Kev with. It'd probably keep a ton of people happy.

Moving on, this interview brings out mixed emotions in me (yes, emotions, really). I'm ecstatic with providing what I believe to probably be my best interview as far as getting to know the user goes... but I'm sad with the realisation that Camel will soon depart. It's odd, how you can get attached to what is essentially an avatar... but I think Camel is the reason I'm still here, and I think he's had a huge impact on this site.

Users come and go, but this is one that truly will be missed - of that, I'm sure.

I wish him luck with his new job, with his life, and with his hobbies... farewell, Dave.

Camel, you wil be missed. Although if Megan Gale got a spot on your list I am a lil shocked the body didn't get up there. Gale is no longer talked about, because she is getting old (albeit gracefully)...

No mention of FUIC or Pales was a bit of a shock, and our sports teams stink. Haven't won anything since forever ago.

Cheers Slicer. Was a fun interview to do. And everyone gets attached to the avatar - how could you not? He's holding tasty fruit.

I figured FUIC, Pales and the other foods have had a bit of a run in the other media threads, so I'd talk about something else, i.e. Seppeltsfield 100 - it's the only wine that's ever received a perfect 100 in James Halliday's wine guide. That's gotta be good enough to get mentioned wink

Everyone knows Elle; I don't reckon a lot of non-Aussies (or non-Italians) would know Gale. Getting older, but still damned hot.

And if we never won another championship, I'd still go to all of those sports every week. I want us to win, but I'll be there if we're top or bottom. And we don't stink... 36ers won a championship 6 years ago, Adelaide United made it to the finals of the Asian Champs League and made it to the Club World Cup. And Crows have massive potential. But you know how optimistic I am when it comes to sport!

Good job Slicer.  Congrats once more to Camel. Thanks for all the fun and laughs you've contributed to my time with this game. I hope you will still stop by the forums from time to time.

There's a mistake in the interview there. I somehow got a mention.

But seriously, its been a heap of fun while learning a ton being in a camel team. You're going to have to come visit us on the boards at ozhoops. I'll even set up a guest thread with deckchairs and snags on the barbie.

Re: Meet an Aussie: The one you've all been waiting for!

Camel, my aim was to be on a team with you at some point and then when I was 1 wasn't enough. I think we reached 4 teams together at one point.

Hopefully we get that final Championship this season so that you get the proper send off. I learnt a lot from you and the game will be different without you. You will be missed. sad

Good luck with everything in life.
