Hannibal's Weekly(ish) Top Ten--Season 17 Version

Another season; another thread.  With six games down, the picture is still quite muddled.  However, we have begun to see enough to know who is to be taken seriously.  Pro A has shaken out all of the gym rat teams, but there is still quite a bit to be done to shake out Pro B and below.  With that caveat in place, let's see how I assess the Top Ten thus far in Season 17.

#1) Full Eclipse (6-0): Darkness is descending upon us all once again as Full Eclipse is back from two seasons of gym-ratting.  Headlined by SwaggerJ's perennial MVP candidate, Black Rain, FE has already put Bird on notice by amassing five of its six wins against the top ten.

#2) Diliman United (6-0): Diliman United is back and as strong as ever.  Including four top ten scalps in its perfect season so far, DU seems to be back on the form that took them to the Final Four in season 14.  Unlike FE, DU's build doesn't lead to any gaudy stats and you may not see any of its players on the award watch list.  But, this is still a team to be feared.

#3) Strong Cundiff (6-0): Strong Cundiff is finally back after a seeming eternity of gym ratting, Strong Cundiff has started the season with a huge lead in trained points.  Between this large skill point advantage and their wily veteran diversion tactics [Editor's Note]: What the truck is that team avatar?  I don't get it...and I think I spent more time trying to figure out what the hell was the image than actually properly game-planning to set match-ups/TSP's.[/Editor's Note], Strong Cundiff is not a team to be taken lightly.

#4) Ballin for Dummies (5-1): Another season, another six weeks of having Ballin for Dummies claim a spot in the Top Ten.  Unlike in the previous two seasons, B4D has started off with relatively weak competition (1-1 against the top ten, 1-0 against Best of the Rest).  That said, B4D is definitely hoping a different sort of start will spell a different (and sweeter) finish to the season.

#5) SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS (4-2): Last season, SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS took 20+ games to lose twice, but, given how last season ended, I'm sure SFYL would prefer to get the losses out of the way early in the season.  And, even though there performance has toned down, SFYL's team name has yet to be quieted.  Anyway, with a strong start against top competition (2-2), SFYL will once again be fighting for a final four berth and (they hope) a championship.

#6) CGG (5-1): After a few seasons of bouncing between Pro B and Pro C, CGG has come to compete with the big boys.  It seems that the efforts of previous seasons has not been for naught having split its games against top ten competition (1-1).  However, with a relatively low level of total points, will CGG be able to keep this up all year?

#7) Wizards extreme ballers (4-2): Wizards extreme ballers are hoping to avoid their big fade from last season.  With all of their losses coming from the top ten (1-2 against the top ten), WEB has shown that they are capable of handling the weaker teams.  Now its time for them to step up against the stronger teams.

#8) RK Croquet Hoes (3-3): RK Croquet Hoes are notoriously slow starters, and this season is no exception.  However, unlike previous years, RKCH has been facing almost exclusively top ten competition (1-3).  As the season progresses and momentum builds, watch for RKCH to take on their traditional role as dark horse contender.

#9) Point Whores (3-3): Much like CGG, Point Whores has made the step up from Pro B to Pro A.  While PW hasn't broken through against the top ten yet (0-3), I have a feeling that will not be the case for long.  With an interesting build (3 rebounders, 1 defender, no leaders), PW should continue to be an interesting team to match-up against.  They are hoping that come playoff time they will have the last LoL.

#10) Golden State Warriors 09-10 (2-4): Golden State Warriors 09-10 have accomplished a first for this list: making the top ten from Pro C.  As you all know, strength of schedule is king when it comes to this list, and after four close losses to top ten teams, GSW9/10 hasn't accumulated the rating points but has accumulated the respect of this observer.

The Last Out/Best of the Rest--Crunch Time and WWWC: CT and WWWC are two veteran teams coming off to fast starts.  While their 4-2 records are very good, most of those wins have come against weaker competition.  However, having cemented places in Pro A, these two team will have ample opporutnity to prove themselves shortly.

Rounding out the top 20: #13) Disgruntled Postmen, #14) ALSUP-D, #15) Chicken Mafia, #16) Mata Nui, #17) RKBB, #18) Boogertown Mudhens, #19) santugon, #20) Int'l Blend 2.0

There you have it.  Keep an eye here for updates in a week or so.

I honestly thought you guys did half gym rat in S15...you weren't that bad, but you weren't what we've come to expect of FE.

Nah, we just had a terrible strategy, which I blame the Captain for! We were already at a TP disadvantage that season so instead of playing it regular, I decided we would stack up on those "other" skills in the skill tree, such as Box Out, D-Mo and Hot Streak. Obviously didn't work out too well tongue

Re: Hannibal's Weekly(ish) Top Ten--Season 17 Version

It seems that my initial hunches on teams has largely held up to the scrutiny of another week of games.  While there were some surprises, much of this top ten will seem very familiar as will some of the teams' seedings.  While we still have four weeks until the playoffs for the picture to change, so far the contenders and pretenders have been crystal clear.

#1) Diliman United (13-0) (Last Week: 2): Diliman United has continued its domination of Bird with another perfect week.  While I would love to see how Diliman faces other potential one-seeds, I can't find fault with their strength of schedule (5-0 against the top ten), nor can anyone with their record.

#2) Full Eclipse (12-1) (Last Week: 1): Despite Full Eclipse suffering their first setback of the season, I still feel that this team may be the team to beat come June 13th.  FE had a week filled with top competition (3-1 against the top ten), and their loss came against a team that they had previously beaten.  As good as FE has been, don't stare too much; you may go blind.

#3) Strong Cundiff (12-1) (Last Week: 3): Strong Cundiff continued its winning ways this week.  While SC has faced relatively weaker competition (2-1 against the top ten this week), the fault lies in the stars and not with them.  Much like the one-loss Full Eclipse, Strong Cundiff's only misstep has come against SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS--a team which they have beaten previously this season.

#4) SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS (8-5) (Last Week: 5): SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS had one of the most impressive 4-3 weeks in the history of this list (3-3 against the top ten).  SFYL was able to beat two of the teams still above them and start to close the gap between themselves and a one-seed.  With the bitter taste of last season's shortcomings still in their mouth, SFYL is definitely looking for a quaff of victory to rinse the palette.

#5) Ballin for Dummies (10-3) (Last Week: 4): Ballin for Dummies has as gaudy of a record as last week, but still haven't done much to prove that it is still worthy of a one-seed.  A dismal performance against the top ten (0-2) marred what was otherwise a strong week (5-0 outside of the top ten) for B4D.  We will have to start beating top teams if we want to still be a serious part of the championship discussion.

#6) Wizards extreme ballers (8-5) (Last Week: 7): Wizards extreme ballers are quietly stalking the top five teams.  With another solid week (4-3 overall, 2-3 against the top ten), WEB has started to position itself for a run at a one-seed come June.  With an above average total of points, WEB may be able to address its few shortcomings and become a force come playoff time.

#7) Crunch Time (8-5) (Last Week: 11/NR): Crunch Time is the first of four previously unranked teams to grace this list and thus reshape the conversation of who the contenders are.  CT is officially back in force after a year hiatus to tweak and improve.  With a solid week against the top ten (2-3), CT has reasserted itself into this watch list and the conciousness of all those preparing for the playoffs already.

#8) Disgruntled Postmen (6-7): Disgruntled Postmen seem to be up to their old steady walking and gunning ways (I would say running and gunning but who has ever seen a postman run?).  Despite an auspiciously terrible record, DP has been performing at the upper echelon of Bird.  With the toughest schedule (outside maybe SFYL), DP was able to put up a solid week of three wins, and it should be noted that all of their losses came against the top ten.  Not ones to go quietly, I'm sure DP is locked-and-loaded for a tough slog over the next four weeks.

#9) Wagga Wagga Wombat Collective (7-6) (Last Week: 12/NR): Wagga Wagga Wombat Collective just keeps coming.  Despite three defeats in a week to #1 Diliman United, WWWC was able to fight its way onto this list.  While its record isn't pretty (like DP), WWWC has been taking its lumps from within the top ten (1-4).  With a solid leadership and stable team, look for WWWC to once again bring the wombat combat to all of us in Pro A and the top ten.

#10) Chicken Mafia (8-5): I was really unsure who to put at ten this week.  Between Chicken Mafia and the two teams to next be discussed, it was a tough decision on who to include in this list.  Ultimately, I went with the team that A) had the top ten win against the strongest team (CM beat SFYL), B) had the best record, and C) had me as captain wink (hey there has to be some perks for me in doing this big_smile).  Seriously though, while my flock didn't have as many top ten games, we did have the strongest overall week (5-2) including wins against some of the fallen.

Best of the Rest/Last Out: RKCH and GSW 09-10 both were able to notch a top ten win this week, but didn't do enough outside of the top ten to hold onto their respective spots (8 and 10).  Both of these teams have strong users and will definitely be pushing to prove my inclusion of Chicken Mafia wrong as soon as possible.

Rounding out the top 20: #13) CGG, #14) Point Whores, #15) team ritche, #16) Pwnstars,  #17) santugon, #18) RKBB, #19) OPM, #20) Mata Nui Despots

The Fallen
#1) CGG (7-6)-- I had some concerns about CGG last week:

However, with a relatively low level of total points, will CGG be able to keep this up all year?

Unfortunately for CGG, my observation seems to indicate the troubles that they had this week against the top ten (0-5).  There is a lot of season left, but CGG has a lot of ground to make up (in regards to skill points and secondaries) to earn their way back onto the list.

#2) Point Whores (5-8)--Point Whores, like their predecessors on the fallen list, had a horrific week against the top ten (0-5).  While it does not seem likely that they will have the "last LoL", they have four weeks to right the ship and prove me wrong.  But, based on some of the performances this week, I'm not sure if four weeks is enough time.

Well that's all the news that's fit to print.  I apologize about being a little late this week, but these are meant to be Weekly(ish) for just these sort of work weeks!  Check back here next week for more Bird analysis.  Until then, this is Hannibal signing off.
